A Raja Ampat charter booking is not one transaction; it is five stages. Between December 2025 and June 2026 our reservations desk handled 823 active enquiry conversations and sent 15,245 outbound replies, all written by staff rather than an automated responder. Most of that traffic was questions about dates, boats and logistics — not payment.
Everything below describes our own booking process, drawn from anonymised aggregate data from that desk. It is operator data, not third-party research, and we have not audited how anyone else runs their enquiries.

What actually happens between your first message and boarding
Charter enquiries rarely arrive as a clean brief. They arrive as one line — a month, a rough headcount, sometimes just “is the boat free in August?” The desk’s job is to turn that into a dated, contracted departure without making the guest learn how the charter market works. It moves through five stages.
- Enquiry. Dates, guest count, and whether you want the whole boat to yourselves or berths on a shared departure. Nothing is held yet and nothing is charged.
- Shortlist. Two or three vessels that actually fit the party, matched against cabin count and layout rather than against whatever is easiest to sell. Our own fleet is nine owned and operated vessels — Komodo Signature (78.2 m), Komodo Prestige (66 m), Naturalia, Ayvara Cruises, Malca Voyages, Catnazse Liveaboard, Pinta Phinisi, Mosalaki and Neptune Cruise. Anything else we charter for you is a vetted partner vessel, and we say so in writing rather than letting it read as ours.
- Dated hold. A specific vessel on specific dates, confirmed in writing, before any money moves. This is the stage travellers most often skip and most often regret, because a verbal “should be fine” is not a hold.
- Contract and deposit. A charter contract naming the vessel, the dates, the guest count and the payment schedule. We accept Stripe, Airwallex, American Express, Visa and Mastercard.
- Pre-boarding logistics. Flight connections into the boarding day, transfers, dietary and medical notes, and the boarding window itself — handled by the same desk that answered your first message, not passed to a separate department.
The desk is busiest at 09:00 and again at 14:00 WITA
Enquiry traffic across those seven months clustered into two daily peaks: 09:00 to 11:00 WITA, and a second wave around 14:00 to 15:00 WITA. That is useful arithmetic if you are booking from abroad. WITA is UTC+8, so the morning peak falls around 03:00 in Central European summer time and around 21:00 the previous evening on the US East Coast.
The practical read: write at your own breakfast time in Paris or Madrid and your message lands in Labuan Bajo mid-afternoon, on the second wave. Guests came from more than 25 countries in this period, with the largest groups from Indonesia, the US and Canada, France, Italy, the UK, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany and Australia. No single time zone owns the queue.
Enquiry volume nearly tripled between March and May 2026
The desk logged 7,682 messages in March 2026 and 22,229 in May 2026. That is a measured swing in demand inside one season, and it changes how a booking conversation feels. In a quiet month a shortlist can sit open for days. In a heavy month the same shortlist competes with other live enquiries for the same hull on the same dates, which is why the dated hold in stage three matters more than most travellers expect.
Three ways to book a Raja Ampat charter, and what each one is good at
There is no single correct route. Below is the framework we use internally when we judge whether a booking desk is doing its job, with the weights we actually apply, and an honest read of which model tends to win each line.
| What we weight | Weight | Operator’s own reservations desk | International charter broker | Scheduled-departure cabin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One named person owns the file from enquiry to boarding | 25% | Strong when the desk is staffed in-house, as ours and Ultimate Indonesia’s are | Wins if you already have a broker who knows your family — that relationship beats any cold desk | Weaker: you are one booking in a departure manifest |
| Vessel facts checked against a published standard | 25% | Strong where the standard is public and applies to partner boats too | Varies by broker; good brokers inspect, others relay the owner’s brochure | Strong: one ship, one published spec, nothing to shortlist |
| Written, dated hold before any payment | 20% | Strong on owned hulls, where the desk controls the calendar | Strong on managed yachts such as Lamima, Prana, Sequoia and Amandira, which are listed with international brokers | Wins outright — the date is published, so there is nothing to hold |
| Payment rails a foreign guest can actually use | 15% | Varies by operator; ours are Stripe, Airwallex, Amex, Visa, Mastercard | Strong: brokers typically settle through escrow-style client accounts | Strong: card checkout, same as any cruise fare |
| Same desk handles post-booking logistics | 15% | Strong | Varies; the broker may hand you to the operator after signature | Wins on simplicity — a ship like Aqua Blu publishes a fixed embarkation point and time |
What this weighting favours, plainly. Loading 45% onto “one named person owns the file” plus “same desk handles logistics” favours owner-operators who run their own reservations desk — which is a description of us. If your priority is instead a fixed departure date you can buy like an airline ticket, weight the scheduled-departure column higher and an expedition ship such as Aqua Blu will come out ahead of us on your list. If you already work with a charter broker who has placed your family on boats for years, weight the broker relationship higher and Lamima or Prana through that broker will beat any direct desk, including ours. Both are reasonable ways to rank, and neither is wrong.

What a desk can answer on day one, and what genuinely takes longer
Same-day answers: availability on owned hulls, cabin configuration, what is and is not included, and an indicative nightly range. Private whole-boat charter in this segment runs from roughly USD 1,800 to USD 30,000 per night depending on the vessel, and if you want to sanity-check where a quote sits, the published market median is USD 7,225 per night across 62 rated vessels out of 179 tracked in the 2026 charter market report covering 179 vessels.
Slower by nature: confirming a partner vessel’s current condition and crew, which is checked against the published 12-point vessel quality standard we apply to boats we do not own; sequencing an itinerary around your flight dates; and anything requiring an owner’s counter-signature. If a desk gives you an instant yes on all of that, it has not checked.
Who you are actually talking to
The operating company is PT Komodo Bahari Nusantara, an Indonesian tour operator licensed under KBLI 79120, working out of Labuan Bajo since 2015. Guest feedback sits at 4.9 out of 5 from 1,500+ verified guests across Google and TripAdvisor, aggregated by Trustindex. The Komodo Luxury listing holds TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice awards for 2025 and 2026. Founder and CEO Agung Afif is a member of the Forbes Business Council, which is a paid professional membership community — not a Forbes award, ranking or editorial endorsement, and it should not be read as one.
Frequently asked questions
How far ahead should I send my first enquiry?
Earlier than most people assume, because demand moves fast inside a season. Our own desk went from 7,682 messages in March 2026 to 22,229 in May 2026. Dates that look wide open when you first browse in March are being actively asked about by May, so an early enquiry mostly buys you a longer shortlist rather than a better price.
Can I book a single cabin instead of the whole boat?
Yes. Alongside whole-boat private charter, the group operates shared-cabin liveaboard departures — 3D2N shared luxury cabins on Ayvara, Malca and Naturalia. Shared cabins suit couples and solo travellers who want the vessel experience without funding an entire hull; whole-boat charter suits families and groups who want the route and the schedule built around them.
What payment methods do you accept?
Stripe, Airwallex, American Express, Visa and Mastercard. The payment schedule itself — what is due when — is written into the charter contract before you pay anything, so you should be able to read the full sequence before the first transfer, not after.
Am I talking to a person or an automated responder?
A person. Across December 2025 to June 2026 the desk sent 15,245 outbound replies against 823 active enquiry conversations. That ratio is what a staffed concierge looks like in the data: over eighteen written replies per conversation, which is not a volume a template survives.
Last verified: August 2026.
